This was a question one of my Dialing for Dollars Workshop Participants asked me the other day. Great question and one I am sure a lot of new marketers ponder. Here was my reply:
"I was not born an expert either! No one was. We all had to develop our skills, our reputation and our credibility and our following over time. It is a journey, not an event! It takes time and persistence and the best time to start is now!"So how do you get started?
1. To Be a Good Leader, You Must First Be a Good Follower. In our beginning stages my husband Pat and I attended every team and company conference call and event. We consistently volunteered to share our testimonial. We consistently brought guests. We asked our team leaders what we could do to help and we took part in presenting the training. It wasn't long before they were sending us referrals and edifying us as leaders.
2. Create a Fast Start Success Story. For example, with one company we were with we personally sponsored 12 people in 24 hours, 30 within the first week and had a team of 100 in the fist 30 days. That went on to duplicate into 18,000 members in 18 months. People are attracted to success so it's so worth sacrificing your time in the beginning to create a story that will last a life-time! So, no matter how long you've been at it, make today be DAY #1 and put your head down and create a 30 - 90 day success story. Set a goal that is achievable but that causes you to really stretch and expand. Eat, drink, breathe, sleep your business. Put everything else you can aside and FOCUS! Make a public declaration of your goal and find an Accountability Partner to help hold you to it and JUST DO IT!!!
3. Borrow Someone Else's Story. When I first started in Network Marketing over 20 years ago, I told my upline's success story (she happened to be my sister, Lisa) and I told everyone that I was going to do what she had done. The more I told her story, the more committed I became. I followed her blueprint and I achieved what she had in exactly the same amount of time. This also held me accountable because I told so many people what I was going to accomplish.
4. Fake it Until You Make It! Now, I don't mean put on airs or be phony. What I do mean is: DO WHAT LEADERS DO. Think of any leader you admire and write down a list of the qualities you admire in them and then put your name at the top of that list and adopt those qualities in yourself.
5. Start Building Your Following Now. It doesn't matter if you are brand new and you only have one or two people in your pipeline. Plug them into a system! Get on Face Book and Twitter and You Tube and start interacting. Study what other successful people are doing and adopt one new thing at a time. Start your own blog. I am not an expert blogger and I didn't take any classes, I just started. That's half the battle right there...and then you just improve a little every day.
Great leaders do not make excuses because they understand you cannot make excuses and money (and a difference) at the same time.Leaders take action and they move consistently toward what they intend to create. They expand their circle of influence over time by sharing ideas and resources of value to others. They're willing to try new things and they know that there is no such thing as failure, only feedback.
